So what goes into the Michell Engineering Gyro SE?

The Gyro SE is a modern icon. It's the turntable that even non hi-fi buffs will have seen at some point, and will remember for its beautiful design, which seems strangely timeless.
It's a deck which has a long pedigree, being the son of the illustrious Gyrodec, as famous in the 80's and 90's as the Gyro SE is now. It even has an indirect link with the famous iconic Transcriptors turntable from the 70's, which was built in the same Michell Engineering facility (for, unrelated company, Transcriptors Ltd).
Anyhow, not many people see what goes into the Gyro, and to rectify this, we present the Gyro SE in bits! It's worth seeing, because Michell Engineering are, as the name suggests, first and foremost an Engineering company, and make almost all the bits themselves in-house. The individual components are beautifully made and finished, as any engineer will recognise.
This is also what you will see if you attempt to build a Gyro yourself, as it comes as a kit of parts. We build up most Gyros we sell ready to play, but every now and them someone will take one away in a box to build themselves, just for the fun of it!
First the most famous bit, the platter, here shown upside down with the instantly recognisable hanging weights

Below is the subchassis, suspended from three springs, to which is bolted the inverted main bearing and the armboard.

Which leads on to the main chassis, sitting on three adjustable feet, below. This is one of the main differences between the Gyro SE and the Gyrodec, which has a full size acrylic plinth rather than the minimal spider affair of the SE.
The SE is reputed to sound better, though, than the more expensive Gyrodec, possibly because of the minimal chassis and the absence of a dust cover.

We then come to the vital bits and pieces without which the deck would be useless!
1) Inverted main bearing with platter locking
nut
2) Phial of bearing oil
3) Springs with teflon rings
4) Support pillars which turn to allow spring height adjustment
5) Cosmetic spring covers
6) Adjustable feet
7) Armboard (cut for a Rega arm)
8) Armboard support pillars
9) Armboard fixing screws
10) DC motor with flying lead and plug
11) Drive belt

And last, but not least, the standard power supply, this one with 13A UK plug. This can be replaced by the owner with the Michell HR power supply for even better performance.

And that's it. Really not that complicated, but the best things rarely are! One of the secrets of the Gyro's success is the policy of Michell Engineering over the years to continuously develop their products. The Gyro is the result of many year's work, and is highly optimised. It is our best selling turntable, and taking into account visual impact, build quality, and, of course, performance, quite rightly so. Our lives would be ever so slightly duller without it.
