Hyperion HPS-938 UK (GBP 3750.00 - piano black finish)

The UK version of the Hyperion 938 has been "specifically voiced for the UK ear" states the importer in Britain. So be it. I'm not sure what the differences are between the UK ear and any other ear in the world, but Matthew (for it is he) has already proved he knows exactly what he's doing (with the special UK mods for the Shanling CD-T100 player, for example, which is specially enquired about from overseas) that I think we should trust him on this one!

Whatever, this is one superb loudspeaker which has acquired a very strong underground (and overground for that matter) following, and with good reason. Although at the time of writing our pair are still "running in", the sonic qualities of this speaker really shine. I'm loath to start getting into specific details of sound quality of loudspeakers in particular because it's a very subjective area, and the terms used can mean different things to different people. In any case, there are enough reviews out there on the web (see the link to the manufacturer's site below) to adequately do the job. All I will add is that they can rival certain other products costing at least double, if not more, the purchase price.

Build quality is meticulous. The bass cabinet, which is separate from the mid/tweeter cabinet, a feature I've noted over the years which can give a speaker exceptional "open-ness" in sound quality, uses two medium size drivers (instead of one large driver) for extra speed of response. The treble unit is a silk dome with a short copper horn. One of the really nice things about this speaker is the 90dB sensitivity (50W min, 200W max power) which means you don't need battleship amplifiers to get the best out of them. Impedance is nominally 6 Ohms, dropping to a low of 3.8 Ohms, which again leads to their compatibility with a wide range of amps.
